Bardstown Area
Kentucky is known for Bourbon and horses. Springhill Plantation B&B and Winery is located just 15 minutes from the “Bourbon Capital of the World”, Bardstown, KY, the “Most beautiful small town in America” (Rand McNally and USA Today). Travel + Leisure named Bardstown one of “America’s Favorite Towns” and as having “America’s Most Beautiful Town Square.” Bardstown, KY has become the destination for all things Kentucky. And yet, Bardstown and bourbon are not the only attractions in Nelson County, KY.
Nelson County, KY offers many opportunities to experience the native culture of Kentucky. Not only will you find all things bourbon but also the religious heritage of the area. The Abbey of Gethsemani, the oldest and largest order of Trappist monks, offers many farm-made products available in their gift shop. You will also want to visit the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral, the first Catholic diocese west of the Allegheny Mountains; Bishop Flaget Log Cabin; St. Thomas Church; The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Motherhouse and Spalding Hall, the former home of the first Catholic college in Kentucky, now home of the Oscar Getz Museum and Bardstown Historical Museum and the Rickhouse Restaurant which has 120 bourbons on the menu.
Kentucky’s official state song has ties to Bardstown as well. My Old Kentucky Home, for which the song was written, is a must-see when visiting. Tour this grand old home and learn the history of the Rowan family and their impact on this area of Kentucky. The Stephen Foster Story is an annual outdoor theater production telling the story of Stephen Foster who wrote our state’s song and many other well-known songs of that era.
Travel south of Bardstown to enjoy an afternoon at the Kentucky Railway Museum and an excursion on the local train. Then hop on over to the newly formed Dant’s Crossing Distillery for a taste of Bourbon and a concert at their outdoor amphitheater. Many big-name acts are known to play at this wonderful venue.
Head over to the Versailles/Lexington area for the day, where you will find many of Kentucky’s incredible horse farms, the Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland Race Track, and several other small towns, each with its own charm. Of course, there is bourbon and wineries as well!
There is so much to do here in Nelson County as well as the several surrounding Counties. We are also conveniently located within 40 minutes of Louisville and Lexington, each with its own unique attractions, restaurants, and atmosphere. Let us help you plan your visit to Springhill Plantation B&B and Winery. You will be glad you came!
